Shoulder Surgery

Why might I need shoulder surgery?

The shoulder is the most flexible joint in your body. It allows you to move and place your arm in almost any position, but it also makes your shoulder vulnerable to injuries like bone damage and muscle sprains and tears. 

Many shoulder injuries can be treated without surgery. It's important to consult your provider about any injuries to determine what kind of treatment is best.

What type of injuries might require surgery?

A few of the most common problems that may need surgery to repair are:

  • Bursitis or tendinitis
  • Rotator cuff tears
  • Instability (when the upper arm bone is out of the shoulder socket)
  • Broken collarbone or humerus
  • Osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis

How do I know if I need surgery?

Your orthopedic surgeon will conduct an evaluation to determine your medical history and symptoms, a physical examination, and diagnostic tests like X-rays, MRIs, or CT scans.

Your surgeon will go over your test results and recommend the best treatment. If together you decide on surgery, your doctor will discuss the possible procedures with you and what they entail.
