St. Luke's Cancer Institute Boise

For advanced, compassionate care for cancer and blood disorders, patients and their families have trusted St. Luke's for more than 50 years. Today we are a network of five cancer centers dedicated to state-of-the-art treatment close to home; patient-centered care and support; cutting-edge research; and community prevention, education, and early detection initiatives. 

Our main cancer center in Boise brings you medical and radiation oncology specialists, as well as fellowship trained cancer surgeons in areas such as thoracic, hepatobiliary, gynecologic, and urologic oncology. Our care team also offers autologous and allogeneic bone marrow/stem cell transplant, and our facility is a National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP) apheresis center. We’re also home to Idaho’s only pediatric cancer program and federally sponsored hemophilia center. 

We’ll be with you and your family every step of the way during your cancer journey—treating cancer, easing symptoms and side effects, and strengthening you physically, mentally, and emotionally.

    Krishna C. Alluri, MD, is an oncologist/hematologist. He earned his medical degree from Gandhi Medical College in Hyderabad, India and completed his internal medicine residency at the University of Connecticut Health Center. He completed his hematology and oncology fellowship at the University of Tennessee Health Sciences Center, where he served as chief fellow.

    Diane Bawcom, LCSW provides individual, couples, family, and group counseling services to adults, adolescents, and children coping with cancer. She has clinical experience and specializes in depression, anxiety, adjustment to chronic illness, grief, and loss.

    Diane earned her bachelor’s degree in human development and family studies from Texas Tech University. She earned her master’s degree in social work from University of Texas at Arlington. Diane is a member of the Association of Oncology Social Work and American Psychosocial Oncology Society.

    Biography

    Madison Bernhardt, MS, CGC specializes in hereditary predispositions to cancer and hematologic conditions. She meets with adults and children who have a personal or family history of cancer to help them understand if there may be an inherited component.

    Madison earned her bachelor's degree in biology and master's degree in genetic counseling both from Ohio State University. She is board certified by the American Board of Genetic Counseling and is a member of the National Society of Genetic Counselors.

    Biography

    William A. Bollinger, MD is a diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine. He earned his bachelor's degree in biology from Lewis and Clark College. He served his internship and residency at the University of Washington and the Boise VA Medical Center.

    Lesa Breding, LCSW, OSW-C serves the behavioral health and practical needs of adult cancer patients, caregivers, and their families from time of diagnosis into post-treatment survivorship. She assesses and treats depression and anxiety; helps with adjustment to illness, grief, and loss; and assists with end-of-life planning. She uses cognitive-behavioral therapy, motivational interviewing, relaxation training, guided imagery, and wellness coaching techniques.  

    Lesa enjoys working with the children of cancer patients to help them understand cancer treatment and increase communication about illness within the family. She also works to eliminate barriers to cancer care including transportation, housing, and finance concerns.

    Lesa earned her bachelor’s degree in psychology and master’s degree in social work from Boise State University. She is a member of the Association of Oncology Social Workers.

    Biography

    Amy Cruz, NP is a family practice nurse practitioner. She has experience in the operating room, neurosurgery, and treating substance abuse. She is also experienced in palliative care medicine, having provided care in both the outpatient and hospice care settings. She found palliative medicine both exciting and challenging, and was thrilled to specialize in this area.

    Originally from Utah, Amy is excited to become an Idahoan. She enjoys exercising, yoga, meditation, golfing, and of course spending time with family and friends.

    Linda L. Erlandson, RN, MSN, FNP works in medical oncology/hematology. She is nationally certified as a family practice nurse practitioner by the American Nursing Credentialing Center, and is a member of the Oncology Nursing Society. She earned her master's degree in nursing from Vanderbilt University.

    Emily Fassi, MS, CGC sees children and adults for hereditary predispositions to cancer and hematologic conditions. She is board certified by the American Board of Genetic Counseling and licensed by the State of Idaho. She is a member of the National Society of Genetic Counselors and the American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics.

    Emily earned her bachelor's degree in biology with minors in chemistry and French from Truman State University, and her master's degree in genetic counseling from Northwestern University.

    Biography

    Peyman Haghighat, MD began his career as a molecular geneticist in the field of cancer gene therapy. He has served as medical director for an American College of Surgeon comprehensive cancer program as well as associate director of a hospice program. 

    Dr. Haghighat has been principle and co-principle investigator in numerous phase II and III clinical trials and his academic research has been published in several journals. He was awarded outstanding clinical instructor by student physicians. It is, however, the privilege of being allowed to care for cancer patients about which he is most passionate.

    Biography

    Maggie Hendrix, MS, CGC sees children and adults for hereditary predispositions to cancer and hematologic conditions. She is board certified by the American Board of Genetic Counseling and licensed by the State of Idaho. She is a member of the American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) and a member of the National Society of Genetic Counselors (NSGC). She is also a member of the NSGC Cancer Genetics Special Interest Group.

    Maggie earned her bachelor’s degree in psychology with a minor in genetics from Texas A&M University. She earned her master’s degree in genetic counseling from the MD Anderson Cancer Center UTHealth Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences.

    Amy earned her master of public health degree in nutritional sciences from the University of Washington and is a board certified specialist in oncology nutrition. In her free time, she enjoys outdoor recreation, reading, cooking, and travel.

    Biography

    Jashmin Patel, MD is passionate about providing excellent, personalized, and compassionate hematology and oncology evidence-based care to her patients. She is devoted to providing the best options for treatment and working toward a positive outcome.

    Dr. Patel has published in the New England Journal of Medicine and served as principal investigator in clinical trials involving a range of cancers, including, but not limited to, breast cancers, myelodysplastic syndromes, leukemias, lung cancer, non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, and colon cancer. She has a special interest in the treatment of breast cancer and women's health.

    Prior to her medical education, Dr. Patel earned her bachelor’s degree with honors in molecular and cellular biology from Vanderbilt University. Originally from Tennessee, she is now proud to call Boise home with her husband, also a physician at St. Luke’s.

    Nichole Roach specializes in medical hematology and oncology and is nationally certified by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners.

    Nichole earned her bachelor’s degree from Boise State University and her master’s degree in nursing, family nurse practitioner, from Northwest Nazarene University. She is a member of the Oncology Nursing Society with oncology-certified nurse recognition.

    Valerie Robenstein, RD is a board certified specialist in oncology nutrition. She has worked with patients of all ages and types of cancer. She is passionate about supporting cancer patients with their nutrition needs during and after treatment. She enjoys the unique challenges presented by cancer surgeries, chemotherapy, and radiation.

    Valerie earned her bachelor’s degree in dietetics from the University of Idaho. In her spare time, she enjoys camping with her family, hiking, and reading.

    Biography

    Erica Ruccia, BA, BSN, MSN, AGACNP-BC is a nurse practitioner with the bone marrow transplant team. She is certified through the American Nurses Credentialing Center and is a member of the American Nurses Association. Prior to joining St. Luke's, she worked as a nurse practitioner at the James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute, specializing in treatment of lymphoma.  Erica also has an interest in medical research and has worked on various studies, including investigating health benefits of omega-3 supplementation and modalities for the treatment of chronic pain. 

    Erica completed her bachelor’s degree in nursing at the University of Cincinnati and her master’s degree in nursing at The Ohio State University.

    Biography

    Timothy Sawyer, MD served for several years as medical director of Saint Alphonsus Cancer Care Center. Dr. Sawyer serves as the CEO and founder of ImQuant, Inc., a company dedicated to creating technology that helps tailor cancer treatment and other medical therapies to individual patients. He has served as co-director for lung cancer research at the Mayo Clinic North Central Cancer Treatment Group, and as adjunct faculty at Johns Hopkins Medical School. He practiced radiation oncology at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, and served as assistant professor at the Uniformed Services University for the Health Sciences. Dr. Sawyer is a member of the American Society of Therapeutic Radiation and Oncology.

    Biography

    Stephen C. Smith, MD is a radiation oncologist who treats both adult and pediatric patients with all types of cancer. 

    Dr. Smith considers it an honor to participate in his patients' care and particularly enjoys the shared decision-making aspect of his profession. He is a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) and the American Society of Therapeutic Radiation Oncology (ASTRO), serving several terms on the ASTRO government relations committee.

    Dr. Smith received his medical degree with honors from the University of Washington School of Medicine where he was a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha medical honor society. During medical school, he published papers on pediatric rhabdomyosarcoma and prostate cancer treatment, and received the Rex and Arlene Garrison Memorial Award for research in oncology. Prior to his medical education, Dr. Smith received a bachelor’s degree in economics from Duke University, where he was an Academic All-American in soccer.  

    Dr. Smith lives in Boise with his wife and three children. They enjoy all types of sports as well as the outdoor opportunities an Idaho lifestyle offers.

    Mari Beth Stein, RN, MN, AGNP-C, OCN works on the inpatient medical oncology and hematology unit as an inpatient oncology nurse practitioner. She is board certified as an advanced oncology certified nurse practitioner by the Oncology Nursing Certification Corporation, and is also nationally certified by the American Association of Nurse Practitioners.

    In the inpatient setting, Mari Beth helps newly diagnosed cancer patients understand their diagnosis and evaluate treatment options. She also facilitates timely outpatient oncology follow up, supports patients with treatment- and disease-related issues; and cares for patients who need extra symptom control, social support, and/or are nearing end of life.

    Mari Beth earned her bachelor's degree in nursing from the Denver School of Nursing and her master's degree in nursing from Boise State University. She also has a bachelor's degree from the University of Colorado, Boulder in molecular, cellular, and developmental biology.

    In her free time, Mari Beth combines her love of nursing with her love of the outdoors by volunteering and serving as the medical coordinator for Camp Rainbow Gold, a summer camp for children with cancer and their families. She is a devoted Boise State Broncos fan and an avid skier and cyclist. She enjoys spending as much time as possible outside with her husband and two children.

Care From a CoC-Accredited Program

St. Luke's holds Commission on Cancer (CoC) cancer program accreditations at both St. Luke's Magic Valley and St. Luke's Treasure Valley. Accreditation by the CoC, a quality program of the American College of Surgeons, demonstrates a cancer program's commitment to providing high-quality, multidisciplinary, patient-centered cancer care. Thirty-four CoC-developed standards set the framework for a cancer program to provide the full scope of cancer care services required to diagnose, treat, rehabilitate, and support all cancer patients.

Access to Cancer Research

Through our participation in regional and national clinical research studies, St. Luke’s Cancer Institute is able to bring trial opportunities to our adult and pediatric patients that are on the leading edge of cancer care. You may participate in many of the same clinical trials as patients at the most-respected cancer centers in the world, including Mayo Clinic and MD Anderson Cancer Center.
