Your Bone Health Appointment

What to Expect

St. Luke's bone health team supports your best health by working in partnership with your primary care provider as well as specialists in orthopedics, endocrinology, radiology, and physical therapy. Here's how our program sets us apart!

What distinguishes our care program?

  • Our team features specialized osteoporosis providers, a nurse navigator who serves as a fracture liaison specialist, and a specially trained osteoporosis pharmacist.
  • Our providers and fracture prevention specialists are certified through the Bone Health and Osteoporosis Foundation Fracture Liaison Service to coordinate care after a fracture. We also offer access to experts in related fields such as endocrinology, orthopedic surgery, and spine surgery.
  • Our providers participate in Project Echo, a weekly collaboration with international experts in the field of bone health, and attend national conferences sponsored by the Bone Health and Osteoporosis Foundation among others to provide you with advanced and pioneering knowledge of treatment options.

What will your consultations include?

  • Comprehensive visits with an osteoporosis specialist to develop a personalized plan for your bone health.
  • In-depth discussions of osteoporosis, bone health, and modifiable risks.
  • Fall risk assessments.
  • Treatment and diagnostics that may encompass:
    • A bone evaluation, which may include a dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) test that uses two different X-ray beams to check bone density in your spine and hip, a trabecular bone score to assess the quality of your bone, and a FRAX score to estimate your risk of a fracture.
    • Labs
    • Medications to optimize your bone health, including infusion services if appropriate for your care plan
    • Physical therapy to learn precautions to prevent fractures, improve body mechanics for safe movement and exercise, reduce fall risks, increase strength, and improve posture
    • Focus on lifestyle changes, including nutrition, physical activity, moderation of alcohol consumption, and tobacco cessation
    • Calcium and vitamin D supplements

While a referral is required for an appointment, we're happy to answer questions about the program at any time.
