Cross section of the skin

Cross section of the skin

Cross section of the skin.

There are three skin layers:

  • The outer layer (epidermis). This is where the skin cells called melanocytes are found. Melanocytes produce and contain the pigment that gives skin its color.
  • The inner layer (dermis). The collagen and elastin in this layer help to make the skin strong. The dermis also helps to keep in moisture and provides nutrients, blood, and oxygen to the skin. Hair follicles, nerves, and blood vessels are found here.
  • The bottom layer (subcutaneous layer). This layer is made of mostly fat cells. It provides the blood supply to the dermis and helps insulate the body. The subcutaneous layer also connects the dermis to the structures under it, such as muscles.

Skin depth varies depending on location. It is thinner on the neck and thicker on the soles of the feet.
