Ophthalmologists are medical doctors who specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of eye problems, diseases, and injuries. Ophthalmologists can diagnose and treat eye diseases, such as diabetic retinopathy and glaucoma; prescribe eyeglasses and contact lenses; treat eye injuries; and perform eye surgeries, such as cataract removal, glaucoma correction, or LASIK surgery.   • Daniel R. Brooks, MD

    Pediatric Ophthalmology

    Biography

    Daniel Brooks, MD is a board certified ophthalmologist who is fellowship trained in pediatric ophthalmology and adult strabismus. He specializes in amblyopia and strabismus (eye misalignment, or “lazy eye”), pediatric cataracts, and nasolacrimal duct obstruction (blocked tear ducts). He also treats adults with eye misalignment and double vision.

    Dr. Brooks is an investigator in the Pediatric Eye Disease Investigator Group (PEDIG), a national network involved in the research of common eye disorders in children.

    Dr. Brooks earned his undergraduate degree from Brigham Young University, graduating summa cum laude. He is also a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society and the Gold Humanism in Medicine Honor Society.

    In his free time he enjoys backpacking, fly fishing, and spending time with his wife and five children.

    Kevin R. Gertsch, MD

    Pediatric Ophthalmology

    Biography

    Kevin Gertsch, MD has clinical interests in surgical and medical management of pediatric and adult strabismus, pediatric cataracts, uveitis, amblyopia, genetic syndromes, congenital ptosis and ocular motility disorders secondary to cranial nerve palsies, thyroid ophthalmopathy, and trauma. He is also trained to manage retinopathy of prematurity. He is board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology.

    Dr. Gertsch's primary goal as a clinician is to help children and their families understand the diseases affecting them and to help guide treatment to give the best visual outcomes possible. Prior to joining St. Luke's, he worked as an assistant professor at the University of North Carolina, and he also served in a private practice multi-specialty group in the suburbs of Atlanta.

    Dr. Gertsch earned his bachelor’s degree in biochemistry from Brigham Young University. In his free time, he enjoys skiing, running, hiking, reading, cooking, and going on adventures with his family.

    Katherine A. Lee, MD

    Pediatric Ophthalmology

    Biography

    Katherine Lee, MD, PhD is the medical director of St. Luke's Pediatric Ophthalmology. She is a former vice chair of the Pediatric Eye Disease Investigator Group, and currently serves as a principal investigator. She also produces and edits publications for the American Association of Ophthalmology.

    Dr. Lee is a board member of the American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus. She has been listed on over 30 peer-reviewed publications advancing the science and treatment of pediatric eye care, and has contributed to numerous research programs funded by the National Institutes of Health.

    Dr. Lee is also a board member of the Treasure Valley YMCA. In her free time, she enjoys biking, running, skiing, triathlons, cooking, and spending time with her family.

  • Ilya M. Leyngold, MD

    Ophthalmology

    Biography

    Ilya Leyngold, MD specializes in aesthetic and reconstructive procedures of the eyelids and face, and has a subspecialty in oculofacial plastic surgery. He is board certified in ophthalmology and a member of American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (ASOPRS) and the North American Society of Academic Orbital Surgeons.

    Dr. Leyngold has taught his surgical techniques at Harvard, Yale, Stanford, and Duke universities. He has also presented his work in Europe, South America, and Canada.

    Dr. Leyngold was recognized as one of the top 10 most successful professionals under the age of 40 by the South Tampa Magazine and served as a team doctor for Tampa Bay Lightning Hockey Team. He developed multiple cosmetic and reconstructive eyelid and facial procedures, publishing over 60 original research papers, reviews, commentaries, and book chapters. He also edited a textbook on corneal neurotization, a reconstructive procedure that restores corneal nerve function and health. 

    In his spare time, Dr. Leyngold enjoys spending time with his wife and children. He also enjoys working out, skiing, hiking, and standup paddleboarding.
