Bariatric Surgery FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Click each question below for its answer:

Why should I consider bariatric surgery, and who is eligible?
Studies show that if you're 100 or more pounds over ideal body weight, bariatric (weight loss) surgery may improve health conditions including diabetes, hypertension, joint pain, and sleep apnea.

Anyone with a body mass index (BMI) of 40 or greater, or a BMI of 35 or greater with two significant health problems related to their weight may be eligible for bariatric surgery.

Prior to your first appointment with a surgeon, sign up for a bariatric surgery seminar where you’ll have a chance to ask questions and learn more. All of our seminars are led by bariatric surgeons.

What do I have to do to be successful?
We focus on two practices after surgery that essentially ensure success if carried out: Solid, high-protein meals on a scheduled basis, and exercise of your choice one hour a day, five days a week.
Do insurance companies cover this surgery?
Many partially or completely cover surgery, but some do not. We can assist you in looking into this.
What dietary and exercise restrictions will I have after surgery?
It depends on the operation that you choose, but your diet will progress to essentially normal, healthy, small meals in the long term.

Because most of our surgeries are laparoscopic, you can start exercising almost immediately.
How long will it take to lose the weight?
It depends on the operation. With Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, most people lose 50 percent of excess body weight by six months, with weight loss usually complete by 18 months. Talk to your surgeon about your specific surgery and weight loss goals.
Will I regain my weight like I do with diets?
It’s been shown in long-term studies of patients undergoing gastric bypass that, as a group, they regained about 10-15 percent excess body weight at 5-15 years after their operation. A healthy lifestyle will help you maintain your weight loss. It’s exceptionally rare for people to see anything close to complete weight regain.
