    Biography

    Derek F. Ipsen, DO specializes in hand surgery and is board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgeons. He is retired from the Army having earned the rank of colonel, and served as an orthopedic surgeon in Germany, Afghanistan, Kuwait, as well as several posts throughout the United States, including Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Maryland. 

    Prior to his medical education, Dr. Ipsen earned his bachelor's degree in pre-med biology from Utah State University, graduating cum laude and earning recognition as a distinguished military graduate.

  • Orthopedic Surgery

    Biography

    Alison R. Kinsler, MD, FAAOS specializes in sports medicine, shoulder surgery, and general orthopedics, including fracture care. She treats both adult and pediatric patients. Her surgical specialties include a spectrum of shoulder surgeries including shoulder replacements (both reverse and anatomic) and arthroscopic procedures to treat rotator cuff, labrum and biceps tendon disorders. Dr. Kinsler also has expertise in knee surgery including ACL tears, meniscus repairs, cartilage restoration, patella instability, and multi-ligamentous knee injuries.

    Dr. Kinsler earned her bachelor’s degree in biology at Old Dominion University, where she was also a Division I soccer player. After completing her medical school training at Virginia Commonwealth University, Medical College of Virginia, she then completed her residency training at Tripler Army Medical Center while on active duty. She served in the US Army as an orthopedic surgeon finishing her military career as a major with nine years of service. Prior to joining St. Luke’s, Dr. Kinsler practiced at William Beaumont Army Medical Center where she trained orthopedic residents in advanced sports medicine surgery and was responsible for sports medicine curriculum for resident education.

    Biography

    Matthew Kopplin, MD practices hip and knee replacement surgery. He has specific interests in accelerated recovery programs utilizing multi-modal pain management and less invasive techniques. Dr. Kopplin performs direct anterior hip replacements; revision and complex primary hip arthroplasties; total, partial, and revision knee replacements.

    For the knee, Dr. Kopplin utilizes patient-specific kinematic alignment protocols with medial pivot design total knee arthroplasties to optimize knee stability and ligament balance. This patient-specific approach aims to custom fit each knee to each patient’s individual anatomy.

    For the hip, Dr. Kopplin has extensive experience utilizing the x-ray guided, direct anterior hip approach.

    Dr. Kopplin is a member of the American Academy of Hip and Knee Surgeons. He serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Arthroplasty as an elite reviewer. His past practice teams achieved certification as a Center of Excellence by Blue Cross and Blue Shield and The Joint Commission in hip and knee replacement. He relocated to Sun Valley after practicing for many years in Montana where he led the joint replacement programs and served as department chair.

    Biography

    Kaitlin C. Neary, MD is an orthopedic surgeon specializing in disorders of the foot and ankle. During her fellowship, she participated in the care of collegiate and professional athletes, and has experience in transplantation techniques for cartilage disorders and sports-related foot and ankle injuries. Dr. Neary has also published several research articles and book chapters on foot and ankle issues.

    Dr. Neary is an athlete herself, having played soccer in college and then in the U.S. Women's League. She is now a competitive cyclist, racing in road, mountain, and cyclocross disciplines. She understands the debilitating nature of orthopedic problems and enjoys working with patients to help them regain mobility and return to a desired level of activity.

    Joanna Peters, NP earned her bachelor's degree in biology from Hamilton College, her nursing degree from New Hampshire Technical College, and her master's degree as a family nurse practitioner from Simmons University.
