Classes and Events

Magic Valley Weight Loss Challenge

This fun and motivational community program encourages and supports people to make healthy lifestyle changes, become more active, and lose a modest amount of weight. The goal is for overweight or obese people to lose 7% of their body weight by the end of the challenge. Everyone who meets all the requirements (weigh-ins and weight loss) will split the $10,000 cash prize!

This year-round program includes:

  • A chance to earn cash for losing a minimum of 7% of your total body weight
  • A 2-week online jump start plan with recipes and shopping lists
  • Monthly e-tips and recipes
  • Quarterly exercise and nutrition classes
  • Access to discounts at the YMCA of Twin Falls and the College of Southern Idaho
  • Information via Facebook and the Weight Loss Challenge emails
  • Connections to others like you who are working to improve their health

The challenge kicks off on Saturday, October 27, 2018, and wraps up on Friday, September 20, 2019.

There are four weigh-ins you'll have to make in order to stay in the running for the cash prize:

  • The initial weigh-in (October)
  • At 90 days (January)
  • At 180 days (April)
  • And the final weigh-in (September)

Basic Rules

  • Register online by November 2 to be eligible for cash prizes.
  • Attend all four weigh-ins: October, January, April, and September.
  • Stay within two pounds of initial weight for the January weigh-in.
  • Lose 3% of your total body weight by the April weigh-in.
  • Lose 7% of your total body weight by the September weigh-in.

Stay in touch and stay motivated. Email your weight in November, December, February, March, May, June, July, and August to earn entry into drawings for cash and prizes.

How are the winners determined?

Winners are determined by the percent of body weight lost - NOT the numbers of pounds lost. Here's how you figure it out:

  • Take the number of pounds lost (ex. 14 lbs.)
  • Divide by the starting weight (ex. 14 lbs. divided by 200 = 0.07)
  • Multiply by 100 (ex. 0.07 * 100 = 7%)
How often do I need to weigh in?

There are four weigh-ins for the 2018-2019 program.

  • Initial weigh-in: October 29-November 2, 2018
  • 90 days: January 14-18, 2019 (Must maintain weight over the holidays – 90 day weigh in must be within 2 pounds of initial weigh-in)
  • 180 days: April 15-19, 2019 (3% body weight lost by 180-day weigh-in)
  • Final weigh-in: September 16-20, 2019 (7% body weight lost by final weigh-in)

In order to compete for prize money, you must attend each weigh-in at one of the official weigh-in sites.

How do I earn a free entry into the FitOne 5k in September 2019?

If you make the first three weigh-ins (first weigh-in in October; 90 days in January; and 180 days in April) and lose 3% of your body weight by the 180-day weigh-in, you will earn a free entry into the FitOne 5k walk/run in September 2019! 

*Free entry is non-transferable; must register for FitOne by Sept 1, 2019.

What should I wear when I weigh in?

For both your first and final weigh-ins, please wear a t-shirt and shorts, capris, or sweats. 

No jeans or heavy clothing are allowed at the first and final weigh-ins.

What if I miss a weigh-in?

You will still be in the challenge but you will be ineligible to win cash prizes. You will continue to receive e-tips, and you can attend any of the classes and programs. 

The weigh-ins keep you in the running for the prize money, so please plan accordingly. Don’t wait until the last day to weigh in.

When is the finale?

We will award all of the prize money following Friday, September 20, 2019. There is no specific event you must attend in order to be eligible for the prize money.

Are there ID or minimum age requirements to enter?

All St. Luke’s Magic Valley Weight Loss Challenge contestants must be 18 years or older with no physical or medical restrictions. 

St. Luke’s recommends the supervision of a medical professional before changing or modifying your diet or exercise plan.

The following conditions will disqualify a participant from winning cash prizes:

  • Weight reduction medical procedures of any type two years prior to or during the Weight Loss Challenge. This includes, but is not limited to: surgical bypass, lap-band, or liposuction procedures.
  • A Body Mass Index (BMI) under 18.5 (the challenge promotes weight loss to a healthy BMI range of 18.5-25.0)
  • Pregnancy during the challenge

Do I have to register online?
Yes, it’s the only registration option as it helps ensure the accuracy of your information.
What happens after I'm registered?

You need to get your first official weight. You may attend either the challenge kick-off or a local weigh-in site.

  • Kick-off is Saturday, October 27 7 a.m. - 12 p.m.
    College of Southern Idaho

  • Continuing weigh-ins (Oct 29 – November 2) are also available. Please refer to list of weigh-in locations.
Are there any refunds?

Registrations are non-refundable and non-transferable to next year’s event. This policy stays in effect whether you are injured, have an unexpected business or family emergency, pregnancy, etc. There are no exceptions.

Please read all of the requirements and rules of the challenge prior to registering. 

Can I participate if I've had bariatric surgery?

Yes, if your weight reduction surgery was two or more years ago, you can participate and win cash in the challenge. 

If you had surgery less than two years ago, you can participate in the challenge and have access to all of the wonderful health information and programs, but you will be unable to compete for the prize money.

Can I still participate and win if I'm a St. Luke's employee?

Yes. Only those who work directly for St. Luke's Community Health are unable to compete for prize money.

What is a team?

A team is three or more people registered together under a single team name. 

The top three teams with the most members will be recognized at the end of the challenge and presented with a healthy living trophy. 

Teams can be comprised of co-workers, family members, church members, etc.

If I'm on a team, can I still compete for individual prizes?

Yes.
