Breast Cancer

Follow-Up Services After a Screening Mammogram

St. Luke’s offers you convenient, timely access to superior diagnostic breast imaging services when a screening mammogram indicates the need for follow-up. Our services include:

  • Diagnostic mammography (using 3-D technology in many of our locations)
  • Breast ultrasound
  • Image-guided needle biopsy
  • Stereotactic breast biopsy
  • Pre-operative breast localization
  • Galactography (Boise only)
  • Direct access to breast MRI and nuclear medicine sentinel node procedure

What to Expect: Receiving Your Test Results

When you come in for your biopsy, we'll schedule a follow-up phone appointment with you to review your results. A nurse navigator will call you to discuss the pathology findings and any next steps.

If the results are positive for breast cancer, your nurse navigator will help with the following during this initial call:

  • Review the pathology results and discuss the type of breast cancer found
  • Review a tentative timeline for treatment and planning
  • Help coordinate a referral to a breast surgeon, which is typically the first step in the treatment process
  • Discuss or coordinate any other resources or services that may be helpful to you

Your nurse navigator will continue to work with you during your cancer journey.

What is a Nurse Navigator?

A cancer diagnosis brings a lot of new information and emotions. Sometimes it can be difficult to know what comes next and who can help. Our breast cancer navigators are registered nurses with years of experience in cancer care. They will provide guidance as you move through your cancer journey and will be your point of contact for questions.

The Role of Nurse Navigators

  • Review and explain processes and information
  • Help coordinate appointments and try to assist with any barriers you may experience
  • Provide support to you and your family
  • Provide resources and referrals to various programs and support, as needed
