HELLP syndrome

HELLP syndrome is a serious liver disorder that can develop during pregnancy. HELLP stands for:

  • H emolysis (destruction of red blood cells).
  • E levated L iver enzymes.
  • L ow P latelet count.

HELLP syndrome is usually related to preeclampsia (new high blood pressure that happens during pregnancy). In most cases, it happens in the third trimester. But it can also develop right after childbirth.

This syndrome often occurs without warning, and it can be hard to recognize. Symptoms include headaches, vision problems, fatigue, and seizures.

HELLP syndrome can be dangerous for both you and your baby. It requires emergency medical treatment. Delivering the baby is the only known way to reverse HELLP syndrome.
