St. Luke's Clinic – Acute Care and General Surgery: Meridian

Our acute care surgeons are dedicated to supporting you through your surgery experience. Our services include evaluation and support for adults who have surgery. This begins by consulting with your physician and answering your questions prior to surgery. Our patients may self-refer, but may also be referred by other physicians, the emergency department, or an urgent care facility. We also accept surgical transfers from other hospitals and new patient referrals from physicians. 

This team prides itself on performing surgery only when it is truly necessary, recommending non-surgical interventions as first-line treatment, having high-quality outcomes and keeping and open-line of communication with referring physicians. We have the advanced training necessary to meet the complex needs of patients requiring surgery for severe or sudden illness. We’re ready to respond 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to make sure you receive the highest quality surgical treatment when it’s needed most.

We specialize in a variety of surgical procedures, including laparoscopic (spleen, gall bladder, colon, and appendix) surgery, laparoscopic Nissen fundoplication, appendectomy, gall bladder surgery, small bowel obstruction surgery, cancer surgery, hernia surgery, splenectomy, and melanoma surgery. We also evaluate and treat conditions such as appendicitis, masses, abscesses, cysts, and diverticulitis.

  • Caroline L. Arthur, MD

    Biography

    Caroline Arthur, MD specializes in a broad range of emergency and elective surgical conditions, including diseases of the colon, small intestines, gallbladder, and appendix. She has a special interest in both simple and complex hernias and has extensive experience with minimally invasive surgery. 

    Dr. Arthur also performs robotic surgery for hernias and some colon/small intestine issues, as well as emergent conditions such as gallbladder, ulcer, and intestinal diseases. Her robotic procedural expertise includes hernia repair, colectomy, small bowel resection, and cholecystectomy.

    Dr. Arthur is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a member of the Americas Hernia Society.

    Richard C. Ballantyne, DO

    General Surgery

    Biography

    Richard Ballantyne, DO has particular interest in advanced laparoscopic hernia and colon surgery as well as thyroid and parathyroid surgery. He is skilled in the performance of da Vinci® robotic surgery for hernia, GERD; diverticulitis; colon cancer and idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP). His robotic procedural expertise includes inguinal and ventral hernia repair, hiatal hernia repair with fundoplication, partial colectomy, sigmoid colon resection, and splenectomy.

    Originally from the Treasure Valley, Dr. Ballantyne earned his bachelor’s degree from Idaho State University. He is a member of the Idaho Medical Association and Ada County Medical Society.

    Robert M. Cavagnol, MD

    Biography

    Robert Cavagnol, MD, MHA, FACS serves as president, St. Luke’s Clinic. His medical practice is currently focused on acute care surgery, and performs a breadth of surgical procedures including advanced laparoscopy, hernia repair, gallbladder removal, appendectomy, colon removal, and other urgent operations.

    Dr. Cavagnol is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He has served as the president of the Southwest Missouri Chapter of the American College of Surgeons. Prior to relocating to Boise, Dr. Cavagnol served for 12 years as a general surgeon in Springfield, Missouri and earned the Young Physician of the Year award with Mercy Health System. 

    Dr. Cavagnol spent three years the United States Navy as a general surgeon at Camp Lejeune. During that time he deployed on the USNS Comfort, a hospital ship which supported New Orleans as the city’s trauma center following Hurricane Katrina. Dr. Cavagnol also deployed to Fallujah, Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom as a trauma surgeon.

    Jonathan V. Giles, MD, FACS specializes in advanced laparoscopic, oncologic (cancer), hernia repair, and endocrine surgery. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a member and Fellow of the Southwest Surgical Congress.

    Dr. Giles earned his bachelor's degree in physiology from the University of California at Davis and his medical degree from Dartmouth Medical School. He completed his general surgery residency and internship at the University of Utah and Affiliated Hospitals, and served three years of active duty as a U.S. Air Force surgeon with the 366th Wing Hospital, Mountain Home Air Force Base.

    Wendy enjoys mountain biking, backpacking and traveling with her husband, friends and family.
