Most chronic wounds are associated with diabetes, immobilization, chronic edema, and circulatory problems. Many Americans with non-healing wounds have diabetes and/or pressure ulcers. And, lower extremity ulcers can develop in patients who have chronic venous insufficiency and stasis.
Other chronic wounds are the result of traumatic injury, non-healing surgical incisions, and a variety of other diseases that affect the skin.
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy FAQs
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy was originally used to treat divers suffering from the “bends” or decompression sickness, but is now used to treat people with a variety of wound healing problems.
This treatment involves breathing 100% oxygen at a pressure greater than the pressure of air at sea level. To accomplish this, a patient must be enclosed in a specially constructed chamber. Our treatments are administered in a hyperbaric chamber filled with 100% oxygen, which holds a single patient.
