St. Luke’s Clinic – Cardiothoracic & Vascular Associates

Our board certified cardiothoracic and vascular surgeons specialize in treating diseases and disorders involving the heart, lungs, and vascular system, as well as treatment for varicose veins, complex venous disorders, and related complications. We offer a wide range of treatments that are customized for your health needs and goals, including minimally-invasive procedures.

We strive to provide the highest level of care, utilizing the most advanced technology available to provide effective, innovative treatment, including:

  • Cardiac surgery – treatment of conditions of the heart, its blood supply, and the major blood vessels of the chest
  • Thoracic surgery – treatment of conditions the lungs as well as other conditions that require the expertise of a cardiothoracic surgeon, such as diseases of the esophagus
  • Vascular surgery – treatment of peripheral vascular disease, which are diseases or disorders of the circulatory system outside of the brain and heart
  • Endovascular surgery – minimally-invasive surgery designed to access the body via major blood vessels

    Caitlin Anderson, NP-C is certified by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners and worked as a registered nurse before earning her nurse practitioner's degree. In her current role she assists with vascular surgery and evaluates patients in the primary and acute care setting.

    Caitlin earned her master's degree from Boise State University.

    Biography

    Eric G. Bluemn, MD, PhD, RPVI specializes in all aspects of vascular surgery including aortic disease, carotid disease, peripheral arterial occlusive disease, hemodialysis access, and chronic venous disease. He is trained in both open surgical and minimally invasive endovascular techniques and is a member of the Society for Vascular Surgery. 

    Dr. Bluemn completed his undergraduate degree at the University of Minnesota Duluth. He attended medical school at the University of Washington and completed his PhD at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center as part of the University of Washington Medical Scientist Training Program, followed by completing an integrated vascular surgery residency at the University of Massachusetts.

    Scott Burnett, PA-C earned his bachelor's degree in biology at the University of Nevada. He trained as a surgical technologist (CST) at Boise State University and as a physician assistant at the University of Cornell Medical College. He is certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants with special recognition in surgery, and is an affiliate member of the Society for Vascular Surgery (SVS).

    Jeffrey J. Gilbertson, MD, FACS specializes in carotid disease, aortic aneurysm, and endovascular surgery. He is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, the Society for Vascular Surgeons, and the Rocky Mountain Vascular Society. Dr. Gilbertson is also a member of the Idaho Medical Association, Ada Medical Society, Frederick A. Coller Surgical Society, Pacific Northwest Vascular Society, and the American Association for Vascular Surgery.

    Prior to his medical education, Dr. Gilbertson earned his bachelor's degree from Dartmouth College.

    Finnegan Greer, PA-C has experience in family medicine, surgery, and critical care. 

    He earned his bachelor's degree in political science and philosophy from Boise State University, and his master's degree in physician assistant studies from Idaho State University.

    Christian A. Hamlat, MD, MPH, RPVI, FACS specializes in the management of aortic and peripheral aneurysmal disease; carotid and peripheral arterial occlusive disease; chronic venous disease; and long-term hemodialysis access using both standard open surgical as well as endovascular, less invasive procedures. Dr. Hamlat earned his bachelor's degree in molecular biology from Princeton University. He is board certified in General and Vascular Surgery.

    S. Scott Huerd, MD, FACS specializes in adult cardiac surgery and valve repair and replacement. He earned his bachelor's degree from the University of Washington, and trained in cardiothoracic surgery at the University of Minnesota.

    Bryce E. Leonard, PA-C has experience in urgent care, acute care surgery, and thoracic surgery. He assists in surgery and cares for patients recovering from surgery in both acute and primary care settings.

    Bryce earned his associate’s degree in radiologic sciences and his bachelor’s degree in computerized tomography, both from Boise State University. He received his master’s degree in physician assistant studies from the University of Washington. Bryce is certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants and is a member of the American Academy of Physician Assistants and the Idaho Academy of Physician Assistants.

    In his free time, Bryce enjoys spending time with his family, golfing, mountain biking, camping, hiking, and snowshoeing.

    Biography

    Philippe A. Masser, MD, RVPI specializes in acute and chronic venous disease, dialysis access, arterial occlusive and aneurysm disease, and cerebrovascular disease. He primarily sees patients at the Boise VA Medical Center, but periodically cares for inpatients at St. Luke's Boise.

    Dr. Masser earned his bachelor's degree from Williams College and completed his general surgery training at the University of Washington. He served four years as a general surgeon in the U.S. Naval Reserve.
  • Biography

    Joel Mathews, PA-C assists in surgery and cares for patients recovering from surgery in both acute and primary care settings. He is a fellow of the Idaho Academy of Physician Assistants and the American Association of Physician Assistants.

    Joel earned his bachelor's degree in political science from the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign, his pre-medicine degree from City Colleges of Chicago - Harry S Truman College, and his master's degree in physician assistant studies from Idaho State University. He also serves as a preceptor and lecturer in physician assistant studies for Idaho State University. In his free time, Joel enjoys the outdoors, sports, and fishing.

    Brian Matteson, MD, FACS, RPVI specializes in carotid artery disease, aortic and peripheral aneurysms, peripheral artery disease, hemodialysis access, and minimally invasive endovascular and open surgical modalities. He is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons.

    Dr. Matteson earned his bachelor's degree in physiology from the University of Minnesota. He completed his residency in general surgery at the University of New Mexico, and his vascular fellowship at the University of Utah.

    Andrew Mesher, MD specializes in the surgical and endovascular treatment of thoracic aortic disease, aortic valve and aortic root surgery, mitral valve repair, coronary artery bypass grafting, and extracorporeal life support (ECMO).

    Prior to his medical education, Dr. Mesher earned his bachelor’s degree in biomechanical engineering from Stanford University.

    Biography

    Ashley Morgan, MD operates on the lungs, esophagus, stomach, ribs, diaphragm, and other chest structures, and uses minimally invasive approaches whenever possible to ensure a quicker recovery than traditional surgery. She has particular interests in lung cancer, esophageal cancer, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), mediastinal tumors, excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis), and hernias of the diaphragm. She works closely with a team of specialists throughout the course of care that includes oncologists, radiologists, and gastroenterologists.

    Dr. Morgan focuses not just on the thoracic condition of her patients, but their overall health, including nutrition, exercise, and tobacco use. She believes that treating each person with compassion while working with the whole picture of their health leads to the best surgical outcomes.

    In her free time, Dr. Morgan enjoys the outdoors, rock climbing, skiing, running, and exploring Idaho's mountains with her husband.

  • Thoracic Surgery

    Biography

    Matthew W. Schoolfield, MD is a cardiothoracic surgeon specializing in minimally invasive thoracic surgery, video assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) lobectomy, and lung cancer. He serves as the medical director of thoracic oncology at St. Luke’s Cancer Institute and is co-chair of the pulmonary nodule committee, to provide expert consultation, follow-up evaluation, and treatment of incidental chest imaging findings.

    Dr. Schoolfield earned his bachelor's degree in biology and chemistry from the University of Sioux Falls. He completed his general surgery residency at Robert Packer Hospital, and his cardiothoracic surgery residency at Oregon Health & Science University, where he trained in VATS for pulmonary lobectomy, esophageal surgery, and minimally invasive tumor staging of the mediastinum with endoscopic ultrasound.

  • Thoracic Surgery

    Biography

    Rosemarie Serrone, MD is a fellowship-trained, board-certified, and daVinci robot-certified thoracic specialist offering patients the latest in cutting-edge surgical techniques together in combination with enhanced recovery protocols in thoracic surgery. Her experience and these strategies help reduce recovery time and hasten return to normal activity.

    Dr. Serrone treats conditions in the chest which include benign and malignant diseases of the lungs, airway, esophagus, chest wall, diaphragm, and mediastinum. She has received additional training in robotic-assisted surgery and endoscopic surgery, and focuses on minimally invasive and robotic-assisted surgical interventions for general thoracic diseases.

    Dr. Serrone's clinical interest lies in thoracic oncology, specifically lung cancer. She works closely with a team of specialists including medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, pulmonologists, and gastroenterologists. Most importantly, her passion lives within patient interactions and offering an individualized treatment plan with compassion to provide the best surgical outcomes.

    During her free time, Dr. Serrone enjoys the outdoors, and all that the Mountain West has to offer, including hiking, backpacking/camping, mountain biking, and skiing with her husband and friends.

    David Stuesse, MD specializes in the surgical treatment of valvular heart disease and coronary artery disease, minimally invasive surgical treatment for atrial fibrillation, adult congenital heart surgery, pediatric heart surgery, and blood conservation. He earned his bachelor's degree in physiology from the University of California, San Diego. He completed his residency in surgery and fellowship in cardiothoracic surgery and pediatric cardiac surgery at Oregon Health & Science University.
