St. Luke’s Clinic – Cardiothoracic & Vascular Associates

Our board certified cardiothoracic and vascular surgeons specialize in treating diseases and disorders involving the heart, lungs, and vascular system. We offer a wide range of treatments that are customized for your health needs and goals, including minimally-invasive procedures. We strive to provide the highest level of care, utilizing the most advanced technology available to provide effective, innovative treatment, including:

  • Cardiac surgery – treatment of conditions of the heart, its blood supply, and the major blood vessels of the chest
  • Thoracic surgery – treatment of conditions the lungs as well as other conditions that require the expertise of a cardiothoracic surgeon, such as diseases of the esophagus
  • Vascular surgery – treatment of peripheral vascular disease, which are diseases or disorders of the circulatory system outside of the brain and heart
  • Endovascular surgery – minimally-invasive surgery designed to access the body via major blood vessels

    Megan Brown, PA-C earned her bachelor's degree in movement science from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor and her master's degree as a physician assistant from Northeastern University in Boston.

  • Biography

    Scott Burnett, PA-C earned his bachelor's degree in biology at the University of Nevada. He trained as a surgical technologist (CST) at Boise State University and as a physician assistant at the University of Cornell Medical College. He is certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants with special recognition in surgery, and in 2009 was elected as an affiliate member of the Society for Vascular Surgery (SVS).

    Jeffrey J. Gilbertson, MD, FACS specializes in carotid disease, aortic aneurysm, and endovascular surgery. He is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He earned his bachelor's degree from Dartmouth College and trained in general surgery at the University of Utah. Dr. Gilbertson is a member of the Idaho Medical Association, Ada Medical Society, Frederick A. Coller Surgical Society, Pacific Northwest Vascular Society, and the American Association for Vascular Surgery.

    Biography

    Christian A. Hamlat, MD, MPH, RPVI, FACS specializes in the management of aortic aneurysmal disease; carotid and peripheral arterial occlusive disease; acute and chronic venous disease; and long-term hemodialysis access using both standard open surgical as well as endovascular, less invasive procedures. Dr. Hamlat earned his bachelor's degree in molecular biology from Princeton University. He is board certified in General and Vascular Surgery.

    Stephanie Hayes, PA-C sees patients in both inpatient and outpatient settings. She assists in surgery and has a passion for the physiology of the heart and cardiovascular system.

    Stephanie earned her bachelor's degree in kinesiology and movement science from the University of Wisconsin—Madison and her master's degree in physician assistant studies from Idaho State University. Before attending PA school, she worked for nearly 10 years in orthopedics as an athletic trainer.

    S. Scott Huerd, MD, FACS is a cardiothoracic surgeon who specializes in adult cardiac surgery and valve repair and replacement. He earned his bachelor's degree from the University of Washington, and trained in cardiothoracic surgery at the University of Minnesota.

    Philippe A. Masser, MD, RVPI specializes in acute and chronic venous disease, dialysis access, arterial occlusive and aneurysm disease, and cerebrovascular disease. Dr. Masser earned his bachelor's degree from Williams College and completed his general surgery training at the University of Washington. He served four years as a general surgeon in the U.S. Naval Reserve.

    Brian Matteson, MD, FACS, RPVI specializes in carotid artery disease, aortic and peripheral aneurysms, peripheral artery disease, hemodialysis access, varicose vein treatment, and minimally invasive endovascular and open surgical modalities. He is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons.

    Dr. Matteson earned his bachelor's degree in physiology from the University of Minnesota. He completed his residency in general surgery at the University of New Mexico, and his vascular fellowship at the University of Utah.

  • Thoracic Oncology

    Biography

    Matthew W. Schoolfield, MD is a cardiothoracic surgeon specializing in minimally invasive thoracic surgery, video assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) lobectomy, and lung cancer. He serves as the medical director of thoracic oncology at St. Luke’s MSTI, and is working on the application of robotic surgery to general thoracic surgery and the development of a lung cancer screening program. Dr. Schoolfield earned his bachelor's degree in biology and chemistry from the University of Sioux Falls. He completed his general surgery residency at Robert Packer Hospital, and his cardiothoracic surgery residency at Oregon Health & Science University, where he trained in VATS for pulmonary lobectomy, esophageal surgery, and minimally invasive tumor staging of the mediastinum with endoscopic ultrasound. 

    Surgical specialties include:

    • Minimally invasive staging of mediastinum for cancer
    • Endobronchial ultrasound with biopsy (EBUS)
    • Video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS)
    • Minimally invasive esophagectomy
    • VATS lobectomy, segmentectomy

    • Complex airway procedures, sleeve lobectomy, and tracheal resection
    • Chest wall resection and reconstruction

    • Diagnosis of interstitial lung disease
    • Thoracoscopic sympathectomy for hyperhidrosis
    • Transcervical thymectomy for Myasthenia Gravis
    • Treatment of mediastinal masses, pleural disease, and spontaneous pneumothorax

  • Cardiothoracic Surgery

    Biography

    David Stuesse, MD specializes in the surgical treatment of valvular heart disease and coronary artery disease, minimally invasive surgical treatment for atrial fibrillation, adult congenital heart surgery, pediatric heart surgery, and blood conservation. He earned his bachelor's degree in physiology from the University of California, San Diego. He completed his residency in surgery and fellowship in cardiothoracic surgery and pediatric cardiac surgery at Oregon Health & Science University.

    Aaron Thomason, NP earned his bachelor’s degree in nursing from Brigham Young University-Idaho and his master’s degree in nursing from the University of New Mexico. Before joining St. Luke’s, Aaron served as a nurse practitioner in family and urgent care medicine at Tri-Cities Community Health Center.
