For advanced, compassionate cancer care, patients and their families have trusted St. Luke's for more than 50 years. Today we’re a network of five cancer centers dedicated to state-of-the-art treatment close to home; patient-centered care and support; cutting-edge research; and community prevention, education, and early detection initiatives. During your cancer journey, we'll be with you and your family every step of the way, treating your cancer, easing symptoms and side effects, and strengthening you physically, mentally, and emotionally.

Our cancer center in Nampa brings you medical, radiation and gynecologic oncology specialists, access to the best surgeons in the region, onsite pharmacy and lab, and a wide range of support services to care for your overall well-being. Depending on your diagnosis and treatment plan, you may also receive care at our Boise location where we have additional specialists in thoracic (lung), and pancreatic oncology; pediatric oncology and hematology; bleeding disorders; and blood and marrow transplant. We're also home to St. Luke's Cancer Institute's first integrated physical therapy service for cancer patients.

    Biography

    Mara Bateman, LAC is a licensed acupuncturist and diplomate of Oriental medicine with the NCCAOM. She holds a master’s degree in acupuncture and Oriental medicine from the Oregon College of Oriental Medicine. Mara is passionate about using the tools of acupuncture to support patients’ well-being on their journey through cancer treatment and beyond. 

    In her free time, Mara enjoys rafting, hiking, writing and spending time with friends and family. She lives in Boise with her husband, two cats, and three ducks.

    Biography

    Heather Bergstrom, LAC is a licensed acupuncturist, providing acupuncture to current and former patients of the St. Luke's Cancer Institute. Heather's focus is on providing palliative care for patients to allow them as much ease and comfort as possible during and after cancer treatment.

    Prior to her work at St. Luke's, Heather spent over a decade in private practice with specialties in orthopedic acupuncture and women's health. She earned her bachelor's degree from Boise State University, and her master's degree from Oregon College of Oriental Medicine. In her free time, Heather enjoys cooking, reading, and hiking in the Boise foothills.

  • General Surgery

    Biography

    Ruth Cho, DO is a board-certified general surgeon with fellowship training in breast surgical oncology. Her clinical focuses include benign and malignant breast disease, high-risk breast pathologies, and oncoplastic reconstruction. 

    Dr. Cho is an active member of the American Society of Breast Surgeons. She has been involved in several research projects and has been published in peer-reviewed journals. Dr. Cho is also interested in medically underserved populations and has done volunteer work in different communities.

    In her free time, Dr. Cho enjoys hiking, jogging, reading, cooking, and spending time with her dog, family, and friends.

  • Genetic Counseling for Hereditary Cancers

    Biography

    Maggie Hendrix, MS, CGC sees children and adults for hereditary predispositions to cancer and hematologic conditions. She is board certified by the American Board of Genetic Counseling and licensed by the State of Idaho. She is a member of the American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) and a member of the National Society of Genetic Counselors (NSGC). She is also a member of the NSGC Cancer Genetics Special Interest Group.

    Maggie earned her bachelor’s degree in psychology with a minor in genetics from Texas A&M University. She earned her master’s degree in genetic counseling from the MD Anderson Cancer Center UTHealth Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences.

    Biography

    Barbara Herbel, RD is a certified nutrition support clinician and currently enjoys working with oncology patients in their journey through treatment. She also has experience with inpatient care, including covering critical care, surgery, telemetry, and obstetrics.

    Barbara earned her bachelor's degree in biology from Walla Walla University and her master's degree in human nutrition at Washington State University. She enjoys hiking, camping, and motorcycling in Idaho’s back country.

    Biography

    Deanna Kinsman, PT, CLT-LANA is a certified lymphedema therapist specializing in cancer and orthopedic rehabilitation. She is passionate about treating her patients holistically and helping them achieve their personal goals. She has been instrumental in building the cancer rehabilitation program at St. Luke’s and is excited to provide a rehabilitation service within the Nampa Cancer Institute.

    Deanna earned her master’s degree in physical therapy from Slippery Rock University. In her free time, she enjoys camping, kayaking, and participating in triathlons.

    Biography

    Benjamin Marx, LAC is a licensed acupuncturist and has experience treating a range of conditions, including pain, nerve issues, endocrine complaints, GI problems, and mood imbalances. Ben is a strong advocate for integrative medicine and enjoys working closely with patients’ other providers to deliver well-rounded, patient-centered care. 

    In addition to clinical practice, Ben has a strong interest in research. Prior to his work at St Luke’s, he served the Director of Research at the Oregon College of Oriental Medicine, where he taught and conducted research on integrative medicine. He received a grant from the Knight Cancer Institute to investigate acupuncture’s role in addressing unmet needs of breast cancer survivors. And he has also completed a certificate in clinical research through the Human Investigation Program at the OHSU School of Medicine. 

    Ben is a graduate of the Oregon College of Oriental Medicine. In his free time, he enjoys spending time with his wife and son, and trail running in the foothills.

    Biography

    Katherine (Katie) Mondada, PA-C is a certified physician assistant who specializes in medical oncology. She has a special interest in cancer survivorship and lifestyle medicine. Her goal is to help cancer patients feel empowered not only through management of their disease, but in the rest of their lives as well.

    Katie was born and raised in Boise. She earned her bachelor's degree in microbiology and her master's degree in physician assistant studies both from Idaho State University. In her free time, she enjoys spending time in the outdoors and with her family and dogs.

    Biography

    Clinton Morgan, MD has a passion for oncology, hematology, and delivering excellent, high-quality care close to home. He also has special interest in newer treatment therapies, such as immunotherapy and targeted therapy. Dr. Morgan's focus extends beyond treatment as well, and he is committed to getting to know his patients personally, improving their quality of life, and helping them make the best decisions for themselves and their families.

    Prior to joining St. Luke’s, Dr. Morgan practiced medical oncology and hematology in Lewiston, Idaho, where he became familiar with rural medicine and outreach clinics. He has worked closely with the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance and has served as volunteer faculty with the University of Washington.

    Dr. Morgan earned his bachelor’s degree from Brigham Young University prior to beginning his medical education. Originally from Idaho, he is happy to live in the Treasure Valley with his family. They all enjoy skiing, hiking, biking, the outdoors, and family vacations. Dr. Morgan also enjoys gardening, reading, and cooking.

    Biography

    Michael Pahang, PMHNP treats a wide range of patients dealing with co-occurring psychiatric disorders and co-morbid medical conditions. In addition, Michael is a commissioned officer with the Air Force Reserves where he works to bring mental health awareness to the military culture.

    Michael earned his degree as a psychiatric and mental health nurse practitioner from Gonzaga University. He also has a graduate degree in public administration from the University of Oklahoma.

    Kristen Pooley, LMSW has professional interests in acceptance and commitment therapy, grief and loss (especially as it relates to cancer), dignity therapy, and narrative therapy. She finds fulfillment in helping support her patients through their treatment journey, reducing barriers to care by helping with community resources, financial assistance, and teaching skills to lower stress and increase meaningful connections. 

    Kristen earned her undergraduate degree from the University of North Dakota, and her master's degree from Boise State University.

    Lauryn Pyke, PA-C is a board certified physician assistant. She has experience in primary care and psychiatry, dealing with a broad range of acute and chronic physical and mental health conditions. She also spent three years at St. Luke’s Cancer Institute working on adult clinical research trials.

    Lauryn earned her bachelor’s degree in human biology from Boise State University and her physician assistant degree from Idaho State University. She is a member of the Idaho Academy of Physician Assistants.

    Nichole Roach specializes in medical hematology and oncology and is nationally certified by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners.

    Nichole earned her bachelor’s degree from Boise State University and her master’s degree in nursing, family nurse practitioner, from Northwest Nazarene University. She is a member of the Oncology Nursing Society with oncology-certified nurse recognition.

    Biography

    Timothy Sawyer, MD served for several years as medical director of Saint Alphonsus Cancer Care Center. Dr. Sawyer serves as the CEO and founder of ImQuant, Inc., a company dedicated to creating technology that helps tailor cancer treatment and other medical therapies to individual patients. He has served as co-director for lung cancer research at the Mayo Clinic North Central Cancer Treatment Group, and as adjunct faculty at Johns Hopkins Medical School. He practiced radiation oncology at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, and served as assistant professor at the Uniformed Services University for the Health Sciences. Dr. Sawyer is a member of the American Society of Therapeutic Radiation and Oncology.

    Stephen C. Smith, MD is a radiation oncologist who treats both adult and pediatric patients with all types of cancer. 

    Dr. Smith considers it an honor to participate in his patients' care and particularly enjoys the shared decision-making aspect of his profession. He is a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) and the American Society of Therapeutic Radiation Oncology (ASTRO), serving several terms on the ASTRO government relations committee.

    Dr. Smith received his medical degree with honors from the University of Washington School of Medicine where he was a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha medical honor society. During medical school, he published papers on pediatric rhabdomyosarcoma and prostate cancer treatment, and received the Rex and Arlene Garrison Memorial Award for research in oncology. Prior to his medical education, Dr. Smith received a bachelor’s degree in economics from Duke University, where he was an Academic All-American in soccer.  

    Dr. Smith lives in Boise with his wife and three children. They enjoy all types of sports as well as the outdoor opportunities an Idaho lifestyle offers.

    Biography

    Jonathan Swerdloff, MD cares for patients with all types of cancer, as well as both benign and malignant blood disorders. He focuses on delivering cutting-edge care that's tailored to each patient's unique circumstances and preferences.

    Dr. Swerdloff is proud to serve Nampa and the broader community of southwest Idaho, eastern Oregon, and northern Nevada. He often has the honor of caring for multiple members of the same family and particularly enjoys the relationships he's built with other local health care physicians and professionals. He is committed to supporting the next generation of oncology providers and frequently mentors medical students and residents.

    Dr. Swerdloff earned his medical degree from UCLA School of Medicine after receiving his bachelor’s degree from Stanford University. He completed a residency in internal medicine at the University of Washington, followed by a fellowship in hematology and oncology at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center where he received the American Association of Cancer Research Award. During fellowship, his clinical and research interests focused on melanoma and renal cell cancer. Today, Dr. Swerdloff is a member of Alpha Omega Alpha, an honor signifying a lasting commitment to professionalism, leadership, scholarship, research, and community service. He is also a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology.

    During college, Dr. Swerdloff competed on the National Water Polo Team. In his free time, he continues to enjoy swimming and time outdoors with his family.

    Biography

    Sri Harsha Tella, MD, FACP is a medical oncologist and hematologist with a special interest in precision oncology, gastrointestinal malignancies, neuroendocrine tumors, and benign hematological conditions. He is also specialty trained in endocrinology with a special focus on endocrine malignancies, neuroendocrine tumors, and oncologic endocrinology.

    Dr. Tella believes in patient-centric care and is inspired by his patients’ resilience and positive mindsets even in the face of extraordinary challenges that many encounter while fighting cancer. In his view, it is his career in cancer care has definitely shaped who he is today and he believes it’s a privilege to take care of people who battle cancer.

    In addition to his clinical activities, Dr. Tella is active in both research and education. Dr. Tella’s research focuses on novel drug therapy development. During his tenure at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and Mayo Clinic, he wrote clinical trial protocols for novel drug therapies in endocrine and gastrointestinal malignancies. His research has been published in high impact journals such as the Lancet Oncology, Journal of National Comprehensive Care Network (JNCCN), The Oncologist, Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism (JCEM) among others.

    Dr. Tella has been the recipient of several coveted nationally recognized awards, including the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) merit awards, Minnesota Society of Clinical Oncology outstanding fellow award for research, the Endocrine Society- Young Investigator Award/outstanding research award, Raisz-Drezner award from the American Society of Bone and Mineral Research (ASBMR), and Mayo Clinic Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA) grant among several others.

    Dr. Tella is very active in American Society of Clinical Oncology where he serves as a member of the ASCO-Self Evaluation Program (SEP) Item writing task force contributing to Oncology fellows’ education. He also served as Assistant Professor of Oncology and Medicine at Mayo Alix School of Medicine during his tenure at Mayo Clinic.

    Cameron Thorpe, MD is a radiation oncologist who treats all types of cancer. He approaches each of his patients as individuals, working to personalize their care. He is a member of the American Society for Radiation Oncology and Alpha Omega Alpha. 

    Prior to his medical education, Dr. Thorpe earned his bachelor's degree from Brigham Young University. In his free time, he spends time with his family and exploring the outdoors.

St. Luke's holds a Commission on Cancer (CoC) cancer program accreditation. Accreditation by the CoC, a quality program of the American College of Surgeons, demonstrates a cancer program's commitment to providing high-quality, multidisciplinary, patient-centered cancer care. Thirty-four CoC-developed standards set the framework for a cancer program to provide the full scope of cancer care services required to diagnose, treat, rehabilitate, and support all cancer patients.
