Using Microsoft Teams to Attend a Class or Event

Join a class or event anytime, anywhere, from any device

You’re planning to participate virtually in a class or event using Microsoft Teams – now what? Even if you’ve never used Microsoft Teams before, you can participate by following a few simple steps, which differ slightly depending on the type of device you'll be using.

First, you'll need a link to join.

  • If class/event registration is required, you'll receive a registration confirmation email containing the Teams link you'll need to connect.
  • If class/event registration is not required, the link will be available on the specific class or event's page on our website.

Microsoft Teams works best when you join from the Teams app - but don’t worry, you can join Teams using a web browser if you don’t have the app downloaded.

  • It helps to connect about 5-10 minutes before the event is scheduled to begin. Here's how:
    1. Click the class/event Teams link (either on the class/event web page, or in your registration confirmation email).
    2. Select "Join Microsoft Teams Meeting."
    3. On the page that opens, select whether you'd prefer to join through a web browser or download the Teams desktop app.
      • Note: If you already have the Teams desktop app, the meeting will open in the app automatically.
    4. Join as a guest or sign into your Teams account.
      • If you don’t have a Teams account, you may enter your name to join the meeting as a guest.
      • If you do have a Teams account, select "Sign in" to join with access to the meeting chat and more.
    5. Depending on the organizer’s settings for the class/event, you may join right away or be placed in a "virtual waiting room" to be admitted by the organizer when the class/event officially begins.

If the class/event organizer has provided an option to call in, the dial-in information can be found either on the class/event's web page or within the registration confirmation email you received. Simply dial the phone number to join the class/event.

Tips for a Successful Virtual Class/Event

  • Check your audio and visual set-up - make sure the volume on your device is set loud enough for you to hear the event organizer. You may also choose to use a webcam, depending on the type of class or event.
  • Find a quiet space - background noise will detract from your ability to concentrate and feel fully engaged.
  • Turn on mute when not speaking - mute your microphone to reduce unnecessary noise, allowing others to listen without frustrating distractions.
  • Turn on your camera, if you have one - face-to-face interaction will help you connect with your instructor and other class/event participants, if desired.
    • You may also decide to apply a background blur or image if you don't want anyone to see where you're sitting. Instantly hide your background or display a new one.
