St. Luke’s Health System is committed to providing safe and compassionate care to all patients, regardless of their circumstances. St. Luke's follows federal and state privacy laws and does not share health information without patient consent or a valid court order. Recent executive orders and announcements from the federal administration have not changed St. Luke's commitment to these standards. All community members should seek medical care when needed.

Does St. Luke’s ask for immigration status of patients?

We do not inquire about a patient’s immigration status when they present for medical care. We care for the patient and their specific medical needs.

Are there situations that require disclosure of immigration or residency status to obtain health care?

We will not ask for immigration or residency status to obtain health care. The only situation that
St. Luke's will inquire about immigration or residency status is for patients who want to explore whether they qualify for Medicaid, which involves confirming residency status.

Do recent executive orders regarding immigration change St. Luke’s privacy obligations?

No.

Some people may avoid medical centers due to concerns about their immigration status. Should they still seek care?

Yes.  St. Luke’s is committed to caring for all who are seeking health care. St. Luke's has no legal obligation to report patients or visitors to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. 

What happens if officials from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, known as ICE, visit St. Luke’s facilities? 

St. Luke’s is a private organization. Any law enforcement entity, including ICE, must coordinate their presence with St. Luke’s Security. ICE does not have special authority to obtain information about patients, and all patient privacy rules apply to ICE just as they do for any other law enforcement entity. 

Is St. Luke’s Security team part of ICE?

No.

What happens if ICE officials request patient information?

Any requests for information from an ICE agent will be treated the same as a request from any other law enforcement entity. Information will only be released if the requirements of St. Luke’s policies and legal guidelines, such as a court order, are met.

St. Luke’s collaborates with and provides funding for many health-focused organizations. Will St. Luke’s change its approach to working with organizations that may serve undocumented community members? 

No. Currently, none of the issued executive orders affect St. Luke’s ability to provide funds for community health purposes.
