Construction for the St. Luke’s McCall hospital facility replacement project begins May 6 and will take place through the summer.

The need to expand the hospital to accommodate the growing community and modernize the aging facility and dated infrastructure was identified several years ago. Nearly 50 percent of the hospital is more than 60 years old, and the other half, more than 20 years old. This creates challenges to meet current regulatory, technology and connectivity standards and to expand medical and community services to meet patient needs.

Initial improvements include rerouting traffic to build a new two-story structure for the hospital’s clinical departments and installing a new water line, sidewalk and utility upgrades. Construction of the new 50,000-square-foot, two-story structure will begin in mid-May.

“I am so proud to be a part of this great team and volunteer board members that have worked so hard in planning a medical center to serve the community’s health needs now and well into the future,” St. Luke’s McCall Chief Operating Officer/CNO Amber Green said.

The first floor of the new space will house an expanded and modernized emergency department, laboratory, medical imaging and infusion departments. The second floor will have 15 private patient rooms, two labor/delivery/recovery rooms, three operating suites, one procedure room, pre and post-surgery recovery bays, an inpatient pharmacy and inpatient therapy services.

The hospital team is working to minimize the disruption to patients and visitors during construction. The area will be fenced off to contain the work site. Offices near the hospital’s entrance will be relocated to other areas of the hospital. Hewitt Street will be closed from the west side of the McCall Medical Clinic property to State Street. Access to Hewitt Street will be from Gamble Street and access to the hospital and clinics will be from Forest Street.

“We’re aware of the challenges building in place will cause for our patients and staff,” Green said. “Our team is up for the challenge and is dedicated to our patients, who are always our first priority.”
