Roadside Delivery Brings Early Mother’s Day Gift for Council Couple

By Laura Crawford, News and Community

Christina and Ryan Lattimer of Council were expecting their second child late in late May. Christina had a normal pregnancy and everything was on track with their delivery plan.

Their plans changed quickly when Christina’s contractions began the night of May 12, coming one after another.

They quickly called a family member to babysit their 2-and-a-half-year-old son, Alan, and began the drive to St. Luke’s McCall.

“The contractions really intensified while driving through the Council canyon,” Christina said. “I could feel the baby coming.”

They made it to West Pine Drive, west of New Meadows, when Christina told her husband “it was time.” Ryan’s adrenalin took over.

“I pulled off the road, parked, came around to the passenger side of the car, held my hands out and caught the baby,” Ryan said.

At that point Ryan called 911 and made plans to meet the Meadows Valley EMS crew at the fire station.

“It was scary going through the canyon, knowing we didn’t have cell phone coverage,” Ryan said. “God was watching out for us that night.”

EMS transported Christina and their newborn son, David Samuel Louis Lattimer, to St. Luke’s McCall. Mother and baby are both healthy.

Christina has worked at the hospital as a certified nurse’s aide for the past four years.

“It was a relief knowing that Dr. Welty was waiting for us and I know the staff. They even cleaned our car for us,” Christina said.

“Mother’s Day came early for me this year.”
