Dixie Dykman - Volunteering to Inspire our Next Generation

June 12, 2014
Inspiration... It’s how each generation passes the torch of community generosity to the next. Dixie Dykman was inspired by Dr. Jerry Hirschfeld, her son’s pediatrician, and the nurses and staff who cared for newborn Bryan in St. Luke’s Newborn Intensive Care Unit (NICU). She and her husband Allen were in shock. “As first time parents, having something ‘wrong’ with our son was traumatic,” Dixie says. “But the staff in the NICU was amazing.”

Their kindness and care sparked Dixie’s dedication to our communities’ children and families through her work with St. Luke’s Children’s. “I wanted to be a part of this great entity that had helped us so much,” she says. “And Allen and I are passionate about sharing the blessings we’ve been given.”

Dr. Hirschfeld was the founding medical director when St. Luke’s became a Children’s Hospital in 1999, and he encouraged Dixie to join the Children’s Advisory Board. She has dedicated nearly two decades to children’s healthcare, working to build philanthropic support for the hospital. And the need continues to grow: More than half of all children we treat depend on Medicaid or charity care.

“My goal is to inspire the next generation to make a difference in the lives of children and families,” Dixie says. “They’ll find that they’ll get back more than they could ever give.”
