Sixth Year of Funding Will Help Promote Childhood Obesity Prevention Efforts and Key Safety Initiatives for Treasure Valley Children

BOISE, Idaho  — Combating childhood obesity and encouraging safe and healthy behaviors for children in Idaho is the focus of an ongoing community awareness and education campaign launched by St. Luke’s Children’s Hospital and Safe Kids Treasure Valley.

On Saturday, Sept. 14, Dave Grieser, general manager for the Kohl’s in Meridian, present St. Luke’s Children’s Hospital Director Bev Holland with a $66,347 grant during a youth safety and health fair that included a car seat safety check and free car seat distribution event, as well as stations to promote healthy eating and bike and helmet safety.

“Children today face a multitude of health challenges, from an increase in childhood obesity to tragic accidents.” Holland said. “As a society, we owe it to our children to address the dangers of childhood obesity and continue spreading a message of safety. St. Luke’s Children’s Hospital is extremely grateful for the support of Kohl’s in our efforts to improve the health of children in Idaho.”

This is the sixth year Kohl’s has provided funding to St. Luke’s Children’s Hospital. Over that time period, Kohl’s has committed more than $360,000 to help St. Luke’s Children’s Hospital promote safety programs that benefit local children.

Funding from Kohl’s will help support St. Luke’s Children’s Hospital childhood obesity prevention efforts and an education and distribution program call “Safety in a Snap!” The goal of the program will be to teach children and their parents and/or caregivers the importance of “snapping” on either a helmet when riding a bike or skateboard, chest clip or seat belt when riding in a vehicle or a life jacket during water activities. In addition to education, St. Luke’s Children’s Hospital will continue providing free helmets and car seats for families in need.

Kohl's commitment to St. Luke’s Children’s Hospital is made possible through the Kohl's Cares® cause merchandise program. Through this initiative, Kohl’s sells $5 books and plush toys, with 100 percent of net profit benefiting children’s health and education programs nationwide, including hospital partnerships like this one. Kohl's has raised more than $231 million through this merchandise program. In addition to the merchandise program, Kohl's Cares features the Kohl's Cares® Scholarship Program, which last year recognized more than 2,300 young volunteers with more than $400,000 in scholarships and prizes. Through Kohl’s Associates in Action volunteer program, more than 669,000 associates have donated more than 2.2 million hours of their time since 2001, and Kohl’s has donated more than $63 million to youth-focused nonprofit organizations. Kohl’s also offers fundraising gift cards for schools and youth-serving organizations. For more information, visit www.Kohls.com/Cares.
