Healthgrades recognizes St. Luke's Boise and Meridian Medical Center for excellence in patient outcomes

Boise, ID (October 23, 2012) – St. Luke's Boise and Meridian Medical Centers are one of Healthgrades America’s 100 Best Hospitals for joint replacement and critical care and ranked among the top 10 percent in the nation for joint replacement surgery and cardiac surgery, according to a new report from Healthgrades, the leading provider of information to help consumers make an informed decision about a physician or hospital.

St. Luke’s was also recognized with Excellence Awards in cardiac surgery, joint replacement, vascular surgery and critical care.

The report, American Hospital Quality Outcomes 2013: Healthgrades Report to the Nation, evaluates how approximately 4,500 hospitals nationwide performed on risk-adjusted mortality and complication rates for nearly 30 of the most common conditions treated and procedures performed from 2009 through 2011.

“The recognition from Healthgrades is an important validation of the excellent efforts of our physicians and staff guided by the support of our leadership, board and volunteers in our continued commitment to provide the best possible care for St. Luke’s patients,” said Chris Roth, St. Luke’s Treasure Valley CEO. “These evidence-based rankings not only help us identify areas where we are doing well, but also identify areas where we need improvement, which will continue furthering our triple aim of better health, better care and lower cost.”

For its analysis, Healthgrades evaluated approximately 40 million Medicare hospitalization records for services performed from 2009 through 2011 at approximately 4,500 short-term, acute care hospitals nationwide. The study found that patients treated in hospitals receiving five stars had, on average, a 75 percent lower risk of dying and 61percent lower risk of experiencing a complication than in one star hospitals.

Additionally, approximately 183,534 in-hospital complications could potentially have been avoided and 235,378 lives could have been saved if all hospitals performed at a five star level.

The 2013 Healthgrades hospital quality outcomes were posted today and are free to the public at www.healthgrades.com.

Under the guidance of Dr. Bart Hill, St. Luke’s Health System Chief Quality Officer, and his team, St. Luke’s has made quality the primary focus of all its efforts. St. Luke’s is driving best practices across its systems of six hospitals to ensure quality care at all locations. St. Luke’s has also launched a more than $100 million effort to implement one electronic medical record system, that will help better coordinate and manage care across the health system.

Healthgrades independently measures hospitals based on data that hospitals submit to the federal government. No hospital can opt in or out of the analysis, and no hospital pays to be measured. Healthgrades risk adjusts for patient demographic characteristics and clinical risk factors, thereby taking into account how sick patients are upon admission.
