St. Luke's Children's Hospital Donation Guidelines

Thank you for your interest in donating to St. Luke's Children's Hospital. Our patients, ranging in age from newborn to 17 years, rely on the generous donations of people like you to make their hospital stay more comfortable.

Our Child Life staff takes great care in making sure your gifts are put to their best use. Your donation may go to a child as a way to welcome him or her to the hospital, as a prize for getting through a procedure, as a birthday or holiday gift. Your donation may also be used in one of our playrooms or with individual patients at the bedside.

Hospitalized children have special health needs, so we must be extra careful with the types of gifts we can accept. All donations must be newly purchased or made. No used items are accepted. Also, dust, smells (such as smoke and perfume), and animal hair can be harmful to kids who are already sick. We ask that you please consider the following guidelines when choosing your items:

We can take:

  • Toys, books, games, art supplies, stuffed animals, etc. (recently purchased and unused)
  • Handmade items such as blankets, tote bags, pillow cases, etc. (newly made, unused, clean, free of pins and odors, such as cigarette smoke)
  • Food items (non-expired, single serving, in original packaging)

We cannot take:

  • Used or old stuffed animals
  • Used books, toys, games, art supplies, etc.
  • Latex balloons
  • Anything with political, violent, or religious themes
  • Handmade cards for our patients, such as valentine cards or get well cards (these items are better received by individuals in an adult level of development, such as the elderly, as opposed to children in a younger phase of emotional development)
  • Gift wrapped donations
  • Knit hats (due to high volume and low need)

We sometimes receive requests from individuals to hand out gifts directly to our patients. Unfortunately, we are unable to accommodate these requests, as it’s important for us to protect our patients’ privacy and prevent the spread of infection. When you delivery your donation, we require that you: 1) refrain from bringing young children, 2) make sure you are free of illness, and 3) schedule a time for your donation drop-off.

We can generally accommodate donation drop-offs for the Children's Hospital from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday, and 1 to 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. To schedule a donation drop-off, please call the Children's Hospital Child Life office at (208) 381-4758.
