St. Luke's Nursing Apprenticeship Program

Begin Your Career with Idaho's Most Awarded Health System

The St. Luke's Nurse Apprenticeship Program (SNAP) provides students with the opportunity to expand their nursing knowledge and critical thinking skills while working in direct patient care alongside experienced nursing professionals.

The program offers experience in a supportive and positive acute care environment for students to apply critical thinking and nursing knowledge while functioning in the role of a nurse apprentice. The purpose is to build relationships, gain knowledge, and learn the benefits of a nursing career at St. Luke's.

Where do SNAP participants work?

All SNAP participants are placed into either a float or unit-based position.

  • If selected to float, you will orient to multiple areas within the St. Luke's Boise, Magic Valley, Meridian, and Nampa hospitals. Nurses in the float pool have the opportunity to support all patient populations within the health care system, including medical, surgical, telemetry, ICU, ED, and pediatrics.
  • If selected for a unit-based position, you will be based on a specific unit at one hospital. Most of the unit-based positions will be in medical, surgical, or telemetry specialty areas.

Career Path

Once you've completed your first year in SNAP, your next stop will be our STAR Nurse Residency Program. This year-long program brings together new graduates who have fewer than 12 months of nursing experience to help in the transition from student nursing to successful management of a full patient load.

Qualifications for Apprenticeship

  • Completed the junior year of a four-year accredited baccalaureate program in nursing (Treasure Valley and Magic Valley)
  • Completed their first year in an accredited associate-level nursing program (Magic Valley only)
  • Letter from the Idaho State Board of Nursing verifying qualifications to function as a nurse apprentice.
  • Current AHA Basic Cardiac Life Support for Healthcare Providers certificate of completion.
  • Letter of recommendation from a nursing professor indicating a satisfactory academic record.

Time Commitment

  • Full-time from May-July (10 weeks as a nurse apprentice)
  • Flex schedule from August-May (one 12-hour shift a month during school)
  • Full-time as a registered nurse for a minimum of one year after graduation

Participants have a two-year commitment and will be required to sign a repayment agreement should they leave St. Luke’s before the commitment term.
