Protect Against Sun Damage

Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States, and Idaho ranks near the top for cases of melanoma–the deadliest form of skin cancer. You can protect yourself and your family by following these guidelines.

  • Protect eyes and skin with sunscreen, UV sunglasses, hats, long sleeves, and pants.
  • Keep infants under 6 months out of the sun or covered. Do not use sunscreen on an infant.
  • Never use tanning beds or sun lamps.

Choose a Good Sunscreen

Sunscreen is an important part of your skin cancer and sun damage prevention plan.

  • Broad spectrum (UVA/UVB) protects against aging and burning ultraviolet rays.
  • Use SPF 30 or higher.
  • Reapply after sweating or swimming, or when the instructions indicate.

Know Your Skin

Check your skin, moles, and spots for changes, such as itching, bleeding, odd growth, or anything that looks different. Show any changes to your healthcare provider right away.

Know Your Risks

You may be at higher risk to get skin cancer if you have:

  • A family member who had skin cancer.
  • Had a sunburn.
  • Light colored hair, eyes, or skin.
  • A large number of moles.
