Interdisciplinary collaboration is vital to successful cancer care. At St. Luke’s Mountain States Tumor Institute (MSTI), experts including medical and radiation oncologists, surgeons, pathologists, radiologists, genetic counselors, oncology nurse practitioners, social workers, and other specialists participate in “Tumor Boards.”
More than 300 times every year, these experts get together to plan treatment for the most complex cancer cases, sharing their expertise in designing each patient’s individual course of care.
In 2008, St. Luke’s MSTI cancer experts collaborated to evaluate nearly 700 complex cancer cases at Tumor Boards at St. Luke’s hospitals in Boise, Magic Valley, Meridian, and Wood River. They also participated in nearly 400 case reviews at hospital Tumor Boards in Nampa, Ontario, Baker City, and LaGrande, ensuring superior medical care well beyond St. Luke’s Health System.

Patients benefit from the expertise and experience of people they may never see. But they’re there, determining the best treatment possible. We know that when it comes to cancer, the more experts thinking just about the patient, the better his or her chances for success.
It comes down to giving our patients all the knowledge of more than 100 experts in fighting cancer. And that adds up to a lot of hope.
