Wound, Ostomy, Continence Nursing
Wound, Ostomy, Continence/ Enterostomal Therapy (WOC/ET) nurses at MSTI are registered nurses who are graduates of an educational program accredited by the Wound, Ostomy and Continence Nurses Society (WOCN) and are board certified. WOC/ET nursing is offered as both an inpatient and outpatient service in a variety of clinics.
(WOC/ET) nurses specialize in the care of disorders of the gastrointestinal system, genitourinary system and skin including:
Stomas
- Pre- and post-operative education and counseling
- Stoma site selection
- Assistance with dietary, sexual and lifestyle issues
- Post-discharge care and counseling
- Product recommendations for stoma management
Impaired Skin and Draining Wounds
- Treatment induced skin reactions
- Containment of drainage
- Odor control
- Prevention of skin breakdown
- Vascular Ulcers, Pressure Ulcers, Diabetic Ulcers
- Identification of patients at risk
- Initiation of preventative measures
- Comprehensive wound management (i.e., reduction of causative factors, nutritional assessment and referral and appropriate topical therapy)
- Patient, family and/or support person education
- Consistent and accurate documentation
Incontinence Urinary and Fecal
- Assessment and determination of causative and contributing factors
- Patient/caregiver instruction in measures to restore continence (e.g., toileting programs, dietary and environmental modifications, pelvic muscle exercises and catheterization)
- Recommendations for containment devices, absorptive products and skin care needs
- Patient, family and/or support person education and counseling
