Medical Imaging
Positron Emission Tomography (PET/CT)
PET/CT combines two powerful imaging modalities—PET and CT scans— into one useful study designed around the concept of localizing cancer in the body. PET/CT also helps determine whether cancer
therapy is working in the manner the oncologist expected and planned for.
How is a PET/CT scan different,
and what can it do for me?
PET/CT exposes certain kinds of cancer earlier and more accurately than x-ray,
CT, or MRI. The PET/CT image can help your doctor determine whether
a tumor is benign or malignant, or if the cancer has
spread to other parts of your body.
How will I know if I need a PET/CT scan?
Many circumstances may warrant having your doctor order a
PET/CT scan.
-
If there are lingering questions about whether you have breast cancer after other diagnostic testing has provided preliminary information.
-
If you have already been diagnosed with breast cancer, a single whole-body PET/CT scan can search for cancer throughout the body
-
If you are receiving cancer treatment, PET/CT provides quick feedback on how your body is responding; and later, if the cancer has returned or remains in remission.
Mobile PET/CT scanner
A mobile PET/CT scanner is available twice each week at the St. Luke's Magic Valley main campus. A referral from your primary care physician is required for this exam.
