New Graduate Nurse Residency Program

New graduate Registered Nurses making the transition from students to Professional Care Giver who have been hired to work at MVMC

Program Overview:

  • Learning aimed at competency attainment and growth

  • Strong mentoring component

  • Approximate 6-week initial orientation including initial week of competency-based learning modules, followed by several weeks of preceptor supported orientation to unit of hire

  • Continued classroom learning to enhance competency growth

  • Ongoing clinical support by unit educators

  • Ongoing didactic and theoretical learning in the following competency categories:

    1. Communication
    2. Human caring/relationships
    3. Diversity
    4. Critical thinking/intervention
    5. Teaching patients/families
    6. Integration to interdisciplinary team
    7. Professional behavior
    8. Organization of work

  • Program completion based on individualized competency attainment

Upon Program Completion the Nurse Resident will:  

  • Demonstrate competence in performing established nursing procedures
  • Provide age-appropriate care
  • Identify and meet basic patient learning needs
  • Accurately and thoroughly document patient care delivery
  • Contribute to positive work relationships
  • Acknowledge constructive feedback and integrate recommendations
  • Assume responsibility for own professional development
  • Demonstrate increasing skill in patient prioritization based on acuity or urgency of patient need

  • Basic Life Support (BLS)
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
  • Neonatal Advanced Life Support (NALS)
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)
  • Trauma Nurse Core Course (TNCC)
  • EKG Interpretation
  • Basic Oncology Course
