Dr. Charles W. Acher is certified by the American Board of Surgery with a certificate of additional qualifications in vascular surgery. His clinical and research interests include prevention of ischemic spinal cord injury in repair of thoraco-abdominal aneurysms (TAA), renal and visceral arterial occlusive disease, minimally invasive endovascular surgery, treatment of cerebral vascular occlusive disease for stroke prevention (carotid and subclavian revascularization), and limb salvage in severe vascular disease.
His current research activities include participation in a VA cooperative study on aneurysm detection and management, research in treatment of thoracoabdominal aneurysm, and prevention of paraplegia in thoracic aneurysm surgery. He served as executive investigator of the ADAM Small Aneurysm Trial, principal investigator for NASCET Carotid Trial, and on other VA/NIH cooperative trials. He is a co-investigator of the Beaver Dam OFFSPRING Study and principal investigator for the CTAG Study at the University of Wisconsin.
Dr. Acher earned his medical degree from Indiana University Medical School in Indianapolis in 1973, and completed his internship and residency at the University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics in Madison in 1978. He performed a GI and peripheral vascular surgery fellowship at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital in Gloucester, England from 1978-80, and was a peripheral vascular fellow of E. Stanley Crawford at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston.
