Expanding Cancer Care for Children and Families

The Pediatric Oncology/Hematology program at St. Luke’s MSTI has been providing quality health care to our youngest patients for 35 years, meeting the increasing need in the communities we serve. We care for an average of 300 pediatric oncology/hematology patients every year, with 200 new patients diagnosed annually. Demand for services and growth in our region now present a need for more space to preserve the high quality care that families deserve and have come to expect.

We Have Outgrown Our Space

From 2004 to 2009, St. Luke’s MSTI experienced a 39 percent increase in pediatric procedures, clinic visits, and new patients:

  • Procedures: From 7,677 to 10,713
  • Clinic Visits: From 2,803 to 3,902
  • New Patients: From 160 to 223

The Expansion Project
Our Pediatric Oncology expansion is designed to meet the growing number of procedures and clinic visits as well as the population growth that is expected in the region over the next 10 years.

The existing space for St. Luke’s MSTI Pediatrics was configured and built in 1998, when there was just one pediatric oncologist. To meet the regional need, St. Luke’s MSTI now has four pediatric oncologists and one nurse practitioner caring for children, yet they are utilizing essentially the same amount of space as in 1998. The project to expand and equip our Pediatric Oncology program will meet the needs of all five providers and ensure the necessary space and equipment to best serve our young patients.
