Inflammatory Bowel Disease

During pregnancy, inflammatory bowel conditions (bowel disease, Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis) are, for all intents and purposes, treated very much the same as they are outside of pregnancy. As with many inflammatory diseases, there tends to be relative easing of the disease process during the pregnancy, and disease flare-ups tend to be diminished throughout pregnancy. Also, the interval period between flare-ups is often longer. However, the relative protective effect of pregnancy on inflammatory diseases of the bowel also means that there is an increased incidence of flares after delivery of the baby. St. Luke’s Maternal Fetal Medicine specialists can provide guidance regarding safe and proper medical care for these conditions, including the special nutritional needs of inflammatory bowel diseases and their affect on pregnancy.
