Heart Disease in Pregnancy

If you have been told of a previous heart murmur or heart condition, it is important that you talk with your obstetrical care provider about the risks posed by heart disease during pregnancy. If you have seen a cardiologist and have been diagnosed with a serious heart disease, it is extremely important to see an obstetrical care provider as early in the pregnancy as possible. This will help to determine pregnancy risks, complications, and/or any medical attention that may be effective in enhancing the outcome of the pregnancy and the heart disease.

If you have significant heart disease, it is preferable that you visit with your physician BEFORE attempting to become pregnant, in order to discuss the risks of pregnancy associated with your underlying heart condition.
