Children's Specialty Center
St. Luke’s Children’s Specialty Center (CSC) is an outpatient clinical area where many of the pediatric subspecialists on St. Luke’s medical staff practice in close proximity, allowing for enhanced communication and ease of access for families. Located on the second floor of the South Tower, directly across from St. Luke’s Boise Medical Center, the CSC provides a child-friendly atmosphere. A large playroom is available for patients and siblings to spend time before and after appointments. Children and parents can access the Internet for health care information or play games on computers located in the Resource Center. And teens have a special room all to themselves with computers, reading material, and a TV/VCR.
St. Luke’s Children’s Hospital has brought together nearly 50 of the region’s pediatric subspecialists, including neonatologists, pediatric cardiologists, and a pediatric cardiovascular surgeon, as well as pediatric cancer specialists. Pediatric subspecialists provide services in the CSC with permanent offices located on the second or third floors or scheduled time in the CSC clinical areas. Several pediatric subspecialists from out of state also provide services in the CSC during their periodic clinical visits to Boise. We now have pediatric subspecialists in most of the areas that major medical universities provide, from pediatric neurology to pediatric surgery and orthopedics, as well as the supportive resources to provide the best pediatric care. Maternal Fetal Medicine specialists and genetic counselers complement our neonatal program. This team helps make us Idaho’s most complete center for children’s care.
The CSC has a Child Life assistant available to provide activities for our patients and siblings while they are waiting for their doctor visits. CSC volunteers and nursing and clerical employees assist patients, families, and physicians and their staff in providing a friendly, caring atmosphere.
In October 2000, St. Luke’s contracted with the state of Idaho to provide local centralized clinical evaluation services for the Children’s Special Health Program in the CSC. These services had previously been provided at Central and Southwest District Health Departments, the Elks Rehabilitation Hospital, and private physician’s offices. The multidiciplinary evaluation teams are composed of a nurse coordinator; physicians; social worker; registered dietitian; dental hygienist; dentists; and physical, occupational, hearing, speech, and respiratory therapists.
