What are Developmental Assets for Youth?

  • Developmental Assets are forty "building blocks"– specific, positive experiences and qualities--that help youth make wise decisions, choose constructive paths, and grow up competent, caring, and healthy.
  • When present, Assets protect young people from risk-taking behaviors and nurture positive behaviors.
  • Asset Building is a philosophy which frames a vision of individuals and community valuing next-generation youth.
  • In an Asset Building community, all residents see themselves as guardians of the community's youth.
  • Anyone can be an Asset Builder and contribute to Developmental Assets in youth.
  • The number of Developmental Assets experienced by a young person is strongly correlated with their academic performance, social well-being, and health.
